![]() ![]() ![]() The relationship between Nyx and Ignifex is the heart of Cruel Beauty. But when she meets her new husband she finds herself drawn to him in a way she could never have imagined. Hodge’s protagonist, cruel-hearted, headstrong Nyx Triskelion has been raised to marry - and destroy - the Gentle Lord Ignifex, a demon who rules over their land. ![]() (That’s not a bad thing at all, but Graceling fans should take note.) The story combines elements of Beauty and the Beast, Bluebeard and Greek myths such as Cupid and Psyche and Pandora’s Box. The blurb, which describes Hodge’s debut as “ Graceling meets Beauty and the Beast“ should be taken with a pinch of salt I was prepared for an epic fantasy adventure with a dash of romance, while in actual fact Cruel Beauty is more of a paranormal romance with a dash of mystery. Set in a richly-imagined gothic world blending Greco-Roman mythology, ancient history, early-modern Britain and French fairy tales, Cruel Beauty is an ambitious novel but Hodge ties the many strands of her story together effortlessly to create a new, dark fairy tale for a modern young adult audience. Cruel Beauty will be released on January 28th.Ĭruel Beauty is only my first read of 2014, but already I’m certain it’ll be one of my favourites.
